Addiction is a Chronic Disease
We consider addiction to be an illness similar to diabetes and hypertension. As with any illness, in order to completely understand and treat addiction effectively, the biological, psychological and social aspects of the illness all need to be considered.

Understanding the chronic aspects of addiction are critical. While the acute aspects of addiction are dramatic and demand significant and immediate resources, the follow up for these interventions are generally insufficient and often lead to recurrent acute episodes and wasteful repetition of short-term services. The most common reason for poor treatment outcomes is a premature decision to discharge individuals from treatment. This “quick fix” approach often has detrimental effects in addition to failing to arrest the continuing impact the chronic disease of addiction has on an individual, their family and their communities. Positive Steps is an effective outpatient treatment program with the goal of providing individuals with the tools they need to be successful in breaking the cycle of addiction.
